Future changes to the Start Menu button in Windows 8

Over at the Supersite for Windows, Paul is reporting that the Start Orb, aka Start Menu button on the bar at the bottom of the Windows desktop, has been removed in the beta (Consumer Preview) of Windows 8.  Many of us were shocked and dismayed by the way the Start Menu worked, or rather really didn’t work, in Windows 8 (the Metro interface).  Now Microsoft has taken that one last step in eradicating the Start Menu from our consciousness by removing what has become a de facto standard since 1995.

Yes you can still hit your Start key on your keyboard or use the CTRL-ESC shortcut to get the menu to pop up, but how long will it be before the concept of a Start Menu is a thing of the past on Windows?

This is a mock-up of what the desktop looks like without the Orb.
