I’ve seen the rumors flying around. You know, the ones that beg the question – “Will it be the iPhone 5 or will it be the new iPhone?” Well, if you just look at the image Apple is using in their announcement, I think the answer is pretty self evident. Why else would they point out the “5″ at the bottom of the graphic? I mean, it’s not very subtle.
It’s pretty much a given what the phone will look like. You have to wonder if Apple’s security and the ability to be so tight lipped went the way of Steve Jobs. There has been a video released that shows what looks like a comparison between the iPhone 5 and the iPhone 4S. There have been pictures of the supposed phone. It’s probably one of the worst kept secrets of a release of new gear in ages.
So what’s the specs?
Well, the phone seems to be longer and thinner, providing for what is rumored to be a 4″ screen, which is an upgrade from the 3.5″ screen in the iPhone 4s. Also, there’s the big deal about the dock connector. It’s smaller, probably due to the fact that the headphone jack is now on the bottom of the phone, supposedly to make room for the additional electronics required for LTE. This will, of course, be a boon for the accessory makers as they will be producing new accessories with the new dock connector. According to what I’ve seen, Apple will include an adapter to adapt from the old style to the new style of connector, so you won’t have to toss our your older accessories just yet.
It will, of course, come with iOS 6 and all of its new features, which is scheduled for release in September anyway. Yes, Siri will ever be present again, but this time with more hooks into the apps.
What we don’t know
So far, we don’t know if there will be an upgraded camera or an upgraded processor (an upgraded processor stands to reason). More than likely NFC (Near-Field Communication) will not be a part of the iPhone 5, but Apple has been known to pull stunts in the past. We’ll just have to wait and see.
Will there be anything else announced in this event? If you look at their announcement, dig deep into the symbology of the graphic, I would have to say that this is an iPhone 5 only event. There has been a lot of chatter about a new, smaller iPad, but I don’t think this event will reveal anything about it, if it ever comes at all.
